Why lookalike characters do not disguise anything
A recurring belief in this niche is that writing a banned word in styled characters gets it past a filter. It does not, and the reason is worth understanding rather than taking on trust — because people who believe otherwise end up with an account penalty they did not expect.
Before a platform compares your name against a rule list, it normalises it. The most common normalisation is NFKC, and here is what it does to the styled alphabets people use, tested directly:

The first two collapse to plain letters in one step. The last two survive NFKC — and that is exactly why platforms do not stop at NFKC. Unicode publishes a confusables table specifically mapping visually similar characters to a common skeleton, and moderation systems use it. The practical upshot: the styled alphabets are transparent, and the lookalike alphabets are handled by a table built for this purpose.
None of this affects ordinary decoration. Putting ★ beside your name is not an attempt to write anything, so there is nothing for a filter to see through. The only people this catches are those trying to smuggle content past a rule — and the honest advice is to pick a different name, not a fancier alphabet.
What actually gets names actioned
Five categories cover essentially everything, across every platform this site covers:
- Impersonation. Staff, developers, moderators, official teams, or a well-known player. The most consistently enforced of the five.
- Slurs and hate content. In any script, any alphabet, any abbreviation.
- Sexual or graphic content. Including abbreviations that are widely understood.
- Advertising and off-platform links. Names used as billboards, especially for anything selling account services.
- Clan and guild tags. Judged more strictly than personal names, because everybody in the group wears them.
Notice what is absent from that list: characters. There is no group of symbols on this site, or anywhere else, that carries a penalty on its own.
The one real risk that comes with decoration
It is not a ban — it is being unreachable. A name built entirely from lookalike characters cannot be typed by anyone trying to search for you, add you as a friend, or report a problem involving you. That is a genuine cost, and it is the one people underestimate.

A note on emblems that are not decoration
A few characters circulating in nickname packs are live religious or political emblems rather than ornaments — ☬ Adi Shakti is the Sikh Khanda, ☪ is Star and Crescent, ✡ is the Star of David. None of them is forbidden and none carries a platform penalty. They are simply not decoration, and it is worth knowing what you are wearing rather than finding out later. Faces from punctuation. No script dependency, nothing to normalise, nothing to misread.

Also entirely safe as decoration. The usual caveat applies about counting: an emoji often costs two units rather than one against a length limit.
If your name was rejected or reset
- Rejected at the point of saving is almost always length, or a name already taken. It is not a moderation event and nothing has happened to your account.
- Reset after the fact, with a notice, is a moderation action on the content of the name. Read what the notice says the problem was; it is rarely a mystery.
- Decoration silently missing means the field truncated or stripped it. Compare what you pasted with what saved — the difference tells you which.

Can I be banned just for using ꧁༒☬ in my name?
No. Those are Javanese, Tibetan and miscellaneous-symbol characters, and no platform has a rule against them. Millions of accounts use them without incident.
Do invisible or blank names get accounts banned?
Not in themselves. They exist because of how an input field validates text, and what usually happens is that they stop working after a patch — Free Fire has rejected the Hangul filler since OB43. The realistic outcome is a broken name, not a penalty.
Will writing a word in fancy letters get it past a filter?
No. Mathematical and fullwidth alphabets normalise straight back to plain letters, and lookalike letters from other scripts are handled by Unicode’s confusables mapping, which exists precisely for this. If a name would break a rule spelled plainly, it breaks it spelled fancily.
Why did my clan tag get flagged when my nickname was fine?
